good read

I just discovered Cameron Dezen Hammon  and her writing is lovely.  Excerpt from her book.
From the site -
Cameron Dezen Hammon‘s writing appears in The Kiss anthology from W.W. Norton, Ecotone, the Literary Review, the Houston Chronicle, NYLON, and elsewhere; and her essay “Infirmary Music” was named a notable in The Best American Essays 2017. Cameron hosts The Ish, a podcast on love, art, and politics. She earned an MFA in creative writing from Seattle Pacific University and is a writer-in-residence for Writers in the Schools in Houston, TX, where she lives with her family. This Is My Body is her debut book.

There is so much I like about her.
The music.
The worship.
Her wisdom.
Her growth.
Her writing.

response

Last weekend I volunteered at a TAPS event in the Dallas Fort Worth area. This weekend aligned with a fallen parents birthday, so at dinner we decided to sing happy birthday. And they asked us to use our loved one's name. I have not sang that song with his name in probably 6 years. I was surprised how much it hurt the back of my throat and the residual sting in my eyes. In 1989, we were at Garden of the Gods around his birthday and I bought him a hostess cupcake and added some candles to it. The journey started for us then. That was a lifetime ago but I remember and his legacy lives.
