A Woman's Memoir of Stepping Out of Line
One of Bookriot‘s “Best Books of the Summer”: Cheryl Strayed’s Wild meets Anthony Swofford’s Jarhead in this powerful literary memoir of a young Army recruit driven to prove herself in a man’s world.

Raised by powerful women in a restrictive, sheltered Christian community in New England, Ryan Dostie never imagined herself on the front lines of a war halfway around the world. But then a conversation with an Army recruiter in her high-school cafeteria changes the course of her life. Hired as a linguist, she quickly has to find a space for herself in the testosterone-filled world of the Army barracks, and has been holding her own until the unthinkable happens: she is raped by a fellow soldier.

Struggling with PTSD and commanders who don’t trust her story, Dostie finds herself fighting through the isolation of trauma amid the challenges of an unexpected war. What follows is a riveting story of one woman’s extraordinary journey to prove her worth, physically and mentally, in a world where the odds are stacked against her.

Elizabeth Gilbert introduces her new novel City of Girls

This book is lovely. Read it. It is good.

Not uncommon.

I just spent some time in Montana.
If this turns out to be my August tradition I will be completely happy.
I traveled to Missoula via the Santa Fe Airport.  First all if I get a chance to fly the tiny Regional Airport I love it. The ABQ Airport is very easy as well but the Santa Fe airport is just dreamy to me.
I met Anna Wardley  an endurance swimmer. In fact just before she got to Montana she swam across the Catalina  Channel to raise awareness of the impact of suicide on children.
We had a great dinner and I connected with friends from the Tamarack Grief Center.
On Monday we headed to the Flathead Lake Camp.
I was assigned to the middle school boys cabin.
The morning views were amazing.

And the porch had a re-purposed church bench.

We spent four amazing days doing all things Camp. And I kayaked both of the waterfront days!
Missoula is a great town.
The University owns the Mountain and I was able to see the marching band practice.
Lots of local restaurants with yummy treats and new flavors of Kobumcha. And they serve toast.
It is a small town but has a lot of nice places to visit.
It is rugged and contemporary at the same time.
A great independent bookstore that I browsed in for an hour.
Celebrated Tony's passing - Five Years - it is hard to believe.
And now I am 49.

August

This month is sure to be filled with adventure.
I got the must have's out of the way for the next few weeks and I am just being and doing.
Thankfully I am visiting the family the few days.
What a big change, I was greeted with smiles and stories about a recent trip to purchase Bath and Bodyworks hand sanitizers and which scents are the best. She bought five and she loves them all.
She has had an awesome summer. She is a swimmer now and bronze and lean to show for it.  She loves her cousins and her friends.  We chat about books and reread Finding Winnie: The True Story of the World's Most Famous Bear by Lindsey Mattick.
We are charged with doing several worksheets each day.
She likes Pokemon now and have the app. We walked and found some.
Monday we walked to see the Lion King. I had some tears in all of the familiar places. It really is one of the cutest stories.
I am lucky.
